Dreamed of flying in style, where the champagne keeps flowing and the food is actually craveable? Well, anyone can make this a reality through strategic travel hacks. In this post we will explain how we flew in $1,000 Business Class seats on one of the world’s top airlines for only… $32 cash!
As part of our Round the World trip, we took a three hour flight from Bali to Singapore. Because the flight was so short we would have been perfectly fine with economy. However, thanks to some sleuthing on AwardHacker.com we found a reasonable award booking rate for the premium cabin. The economy award ticket cost 7,500 Singapore miles and the Business Class was a little more than double at 17,500 Singapore miles.
This brings a logical question: Why would you “waste” double the points? We originally had some extra miles stuck with Singapore because our plans changed after previously transferring miles for a prior booking. Another reason is because we can. Miles can be surprisingly easy to accrue through signup bonuses, everyday spending, various promotions, and sometimes purchasing them at attractive rates.
During our Round the World trip, we were fortunate to only be in economy class on flights under 2 hours!
How We Did It
For this flight we transferred points to Singapore airlines “KrisFlyer Miles.” (This transfer can be done using Chase, Amex, Citi or SPG points.) One of the hardest parts is availability. So make sure to book early enough and double check before transferring to avoid “orphaning” the miles.
Business Class almost always includes priority check-in, free checked bags, and access to an airport lounge. Singapore or Star Alliance didn’t have a dedicated lounge in Bali, so in this case, we could have also accessed it through Priority Pass.
There you will receive unlimited wine, beers, coffee, fresh juices, food, snacks… the list goes on and on. Not to mention a fresh shower prior to boarding your flight, so that you arrive ready to explore!
After filling our bellies and enjoying the quiet atmosphere, we boarded our flight!
